Last month I wrote about the need to make right decisions concerning
our physical health and well being. God wants us to be healthy in order
for us to be at our best for his glory. I just want to share that the
healthy changes I have made in my lifestyle are beginning to pay
dividends. I feel better than I have in years. Thanks be to God!
Just as proper maintenance is necessary for our bodies, it is
necessary for other things as well. the same holds true for other
things. Over the past two years we have been hit with an unusual number
of maintenance and repair issues that have challenged us financially.
First came boiler and plumbing issues at the 201 property. This was
followed by the failure of the boiler in the church building. At the end
of last year our boiler blew in Groff, and that was coupled by the leak
in the oil tank. Just as we finally got that repaired we were faced with
a broken hot water line under Groff Hall, a leak in the roof at the
rectory, and the roof in Groff Hall began to leak also. Each of these
repairs was costly yet we found the resources to get the work done. Just
as we are ready to move forward with the expansion of Groff hall to add
much needed space, the stonework on the front gates is beginning to
crumble. When it rains, it pours.
What are we to do? How can we proceed with our plans with our
resources so depleted? With these challenges ahead, I am reminded of
Ezra and Nehemiah. The nation of Israel was finally allowed to return to
Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity, and these two men were given the
command to rebuild and repair the city walls, the Temple, and to
maintain and build the spiritual lives of God's people. They faced this
daunting task in the face of opposition and meager resources and yet,
through perseverance, prayer and help from the Lord, they accomplished
all of this is record time.
How did they do it? First, through prayer, worship, and rededication
to the Lord. Nothing would happen without God's help. Spiritual revival
and a heart to do the Lord's work were a great motivation. Next Nehemiah
prayed, planned, and sought help from every member of the community.
Everyone was asked to work and to give to whatever degree they were
able. God responded to their efforts by restoring all that was in ruin.
When the work was done, "The joy of Jerusalem was heard far away."
I call upon everyone to join me in prayer for the days ahead.
Together we can pray, work, and give so that the mission and ministry of
All Saints' Church will reach far into the future. We face a difficult
task but, "With God, all things are possible." And when we are finished
'the joy of our All Saints' family will be heard far away".
