A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare
the way of the Lord!"
(Isaiah
40:3 NRSV)
Dear All Saints' Family,
I pray that this summer has
been a time of refreshment and recreation for you all. The first month of
summer was full and eventful for Janet and me as we were blessed to have
our children, grandchildren, family and friends visit with us for
Julia's wedding. Shortly thereafter we rejoiced at the arrival of our
fourth grandchild, Ellery Camille, born July 7 in California. Usually we
take vacation during the month of August, but this year we were unable
to get away. By sticking around, we rediscovered how hot and humid the
summer months are and how we westerners are grateful for a slower pace
and for air conditioning.
Summer is coming to an end,
school will be in session soon, and we too will begin a full calendar of
activities at All Saints'. Sometimes it takes a while to build momentum
for the fall ministry opportunities, so I am writing as "A voice crying
out: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord!", to remind us
all to begin gearing up for what I believe will be an exciting year
ahead. Church attendance in the summer is sporadic because of vacations
and other outings, and sometimes it take awhile to get back into the
routine. Fall also provides a new beginning for many who have fallen out
of the habit of attending church. What a wonderful time to make a fresh
commitment to regular worship.
September 17 will be our
homecoming when Church School begins. We will gather for a fellowship
luncheon after services, and adult education and other programs will be
presented for your consideration. Homecoming will be preceded this year
by the annual All Saints' Golf Open tournament on Saturday, September
16. If you are interested in playing, there is still time to sign up or
get a foursome together. Sign-up sheets are available in Groff
Hall.
Last year we kicked off the
135th anniversary of All Saints', and we will continue with some special
events in the months ahead. September 30th, we will have a pot luck
supper centered on the theme, "The Future of All Saints". In October,
plans are in the works for a talent show, and we will conclude our
celebration with the Fall Festival on November 4. This year's Fall
Festival will include a roast beef dinner along with our regular
activities. More information for all of these events is in this
newsletter or will be coming in the weeks ahead.
So again, I invite us all to
get ready for a wonderful church year and begin to "Prepare the way of
the Lord!"
God's blessings,
Fr. David+
