Easter 2008
Dear All Saints' Members and Friends,
Holy Week and Easter are the single most
important time for faithful Christians; they are our High Holy Days.
Most other faith traditions place rigid requirements during Holy Days
such as fasting, mandated attendance at festivals, pilgrimages, and
prayers. For us, we never have to do anything, instead we get to partake
of special times out of our loving response to the grace of God. During
Holy Week we get to walk once more the way of the cross with Jesus
beginning with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. We
then hear the passion gospel and stand at the foot of the cross as he
gives up his life for our sins.
The first two days of Holy Week, we will have
special Eucharists that recall Jesus' visit to Simon's house, where
Jesus' feet were washed with ointment, and his casting the money
changers out of the temple. Wednesday is the traditional time for
Tenebrae, which means shadows or darkness, a service that prepares us
for the three sacred days called the Triduum. The Triduum begins with
the liturgy on Maundy Thursday and concludes with the first Eucharist of
Easter at the Easter Vigil. Our job as Christians is to be 'in the
world' representing Christ throughout the year. During these three days
our focus changes; we are called to be the church in church recalling
and retelling the story of our salvation.
Our salvation story is not complete without the
resurrection and we will gather on Easter Sunday to sing of God's mighty
works, praise him with shouts of Alleluia! Christ is Risen!m, and share
in the sacrament of his body and blood. We invite everyone to walk with
Jesus during Holy Week and to experience these Holy Days to their
fullest.
Easter blessings to all,
Fr. David
